OK let me first preface this post by saying I hate talking about politics (probably because I don’t know enough to carry a decent conversation). With that said, lately I have been wondering were the American Pride has gone. Is it just me? When I look back to my childhood it seemed different then it is now. Could it have to do with different presidents, the products we make versus the products imported, is it because the U.S. is more diversely populated? I can’t quite put my finger on what it is. Does this concern you? Is there one thing we can do to get the “spirit” back? Maybe to you it hasn’t changed. Without getting to wordy leave a comment and share your one main thought.
Hi Rob,
The feeling that you describe sounds quite familiar and it seems to live around the globe, not only in America. I am from the Netherlands, where we seem to be struggling with similar issues (forming the European Union recently has had a profound effect on its people – a change that the USA has completed much earlier I think when their Union was formed a few hundred years ago).
My guess is that as our world changes and becomes more connected and open it becomes harder for people to define who they are and what they can be proud of, just by relating wo what happens and has happened within the borders of their countries.
If you ask me, that’s a good thing. Our world is defined by humans, not by borders. All 7 billion of them more the same than different. Building a better and a united world together looks like a more respectful and sustainable future (and an interesting design challenge too
than a future of blindly holding on to the past. Something we can all be proud of.
